San Diego

Marriott Marquis’ in general are very nice hotels.  This one had two high-rise towers that overlooked the marina so the views were spectacular.

There was some sort of science convention while we were there and we passed William Shatner in the lobby. (Wonder if he used Priceline to book it?)

We were given a very nice room in the first tower on a high floor initially.  The room was nicely decorated and spacious but we really wanted a balcony so Stephen went back downstairs, worked his magic, and we moved to the second tower with a balcony room.

There’s something about being in California and having a balcony room. The crisp ocean air, the smell of the salt water, and the ability to have croissants and fruit on the balcony in morning just enhanced the experience all that much more.

We stayed there for 5 nights and had wonderful service the whole time.  With a gigantic pool, a couple of restaurants, and several business areas for meetings, this hotel is fully equipped for all travellers alike.

FYI…Stephen proposed on the path at the marina right behind the hotel.  Truly romantic and a big surprise! The Best!

We found out that we had friends staying at the Hotel Del Coronado so we took drive over to this beauty of a hotel.

Ever wanted to be transported to the era of “Some Like it Hot”?

Well, this beautiful gem will do it.  The iconic Marilyn Monroe movie was filmed here!

The hotel looks like a castle sitting on a gorgeous beach that transports you to a fairytale land. It is majestically decorated inside and out, and has a history as rich as its decorations.

With visits from presidents, royalty, and celebs alike, it is thought to have “the most fame and historical significance” of any hotel on the west coast.

Perhaps one of the most memorable nights of our “Engagement-moon” was sitting on the beach at the Hotel Del to watch the sunset.  It’s every inch the romantic moment you would expect.  I can’t wait to go back!

Since we were also here for business, we got to eat at the exclusive Top of the Marketrestaurant.

This award winning restaurant sits on top of the fish market right on the water with views from Point Loma to the Coronado Bridge.  It is definitely pricey, but it is definitely worth it.

From the moment we walked in, the view takes our breath away.  We dined here with a group of clients, all women this time, so Stephen looked like The Man! 😉

For a less pricey fare, the fish market underneath is an institution.

The next restaurant we tried was Candela’s. We got recommended to this restaurant by the hotel staff.

First of all, it is really dark inside.  I mean I understand romantic, but I was concerned the waiters were going to trip over things.

Next, the restaurant bills itself on Mexican/French fusion.  I definitely saw the French, but I was confused as to where the Mexican came into it.

Nevertheless, we had an exquisite meal.  Fine dining all the way! Just know not to expect Mexican, because it is definitely not.

Well, after that, I was still craving Mexican so the next night we went to Fred’s Mexican Café!

I’ve been to this restaurant/bar a couple of times.  It definitely has a party vibe on a Friday night out, but on a regular day, it’s a great place just to grab some quick Mexican food.

With a fun, laid back atmosphere, it’s a perfect stop to grab a margarita (or two) anytime!

Since we were on our Engagement-Moon, we took in a number of sites as well.

The Marriott is located within walking distance to the Gaslamp Quarter and Horton Plaza.  Both have great shops, and the Gaslamp Quarter is known for its restaurants.

I also got Stephen on a mini cruise around the harbor with Flagship Cruises.

We even took a tour of the USS Midway Museum.  It is the retired USS Midway aircraft carrier, the longest serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century turned into a really cool museum.

It’s a great place to take the kids to learn about our Naval history. You can explore just about everywhere from the galleys to the engine room to the sleeping quarters and the officer’s quarters.  There are flight simulators, helicopters, old planes, the works.  Admission includes a self-guided tour! $19 for adults, $10 for kids, active military are free!

One last note…

If you’re looking to do San Diego as more of the backpacker on a budget, try the 500 West Hotel. It’s about as nice as a hostel can get.

I had a quick overnight in October of 2011, I was on a budget, and a friend recommended it.

Now, mind you, I’m a pretty street-smart girl for the little blondie that I am, but I’m no fool.  I requested he recommend the safest, cleanest place I could get for practically nothing.

I felt almost completely comfortable here.  It’s in a good location between the Gaslamp Quarter and the seaport where I was able to walk around without being scared because I was on my own.

I opted for the no TV single room for $49. The shared bathrooms in the hall were actually four individual bathrooms with showers in each bathroom. Free Wi-Fi topped off the package and made it a good safe option for a single girl!

I’d recommend it!
