Jekyll Island and Sea Island

The legacy of the original Jekyll Island Club is one of history and hospitality. Founded in 1886, the Club was once the private winter retreat of America’s wealthiest families with such members as Morgan, Rockefeller, Pulitzer and Vanderbilt. It all began at the turn of the century, and now the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is one of the top resorts in Georgia, and open to you. The Victorian clubhouse with its famed turret, along with a collection of adjacent structures, have been splendidly restored and are the centerpiece of Jekyll Island’s renowned National Historic Landmark District. Our admired trilogy of premier guest amenities, rich history and gracious service has made the Jekyll Island Club Hotel a celebrated and award-winning vacation and meetings resort for over 25 years. Located on one of Georgia’s most beautiful coastal barrier islands–acclaimed for its beaches, recreation and spectacular natural beauty–a truly landmark experience awaits you.

Ranked among the top 500 resorts in the world by Travel & Leisure, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is situated on an unhurried, unspoiled barrier island along Georgia’s spectacular Atlantic coast.  Stephen needed to view a property near the island so we decided to “road trip it” down there.  After a ten-hour drive, we arrived at the Jekyll Island Club at 2am.  The security guard helped us find the main lobby and parking, and then gave our luggage and us a ride in his golf cart to our building.  Right away, I knew this was going to be a great experience.

Our room was quaint and overlooked the croquet grounds on the hotel’s front lawn.  We had a delicious smoothie the next morning at their Club Café, and then used the map they gave us to tour the island.  Several different trails for biking were available, but we opted to do the three and a half mile walk around the golf course to the beach and back.

That night we opted to have dinner in the Grand Dining Room.  Not only was the food delicious, the service was impeccable.  We had such a great time that came back to dine again the next night.

On the second afternoon, we met with Stephen’s business associate for lunch at the prestigious Sea Island Club.

Annual recipient of the prestigious Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond awards since 2001, The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club is a premier hideaway for those seeking privacy and classic luxury. It is also, most assuredly, a golfer’s paradise.

The Lodge is distinctive. In both its architectural style and its setting, the Lodge is reminiscent of an English country manor. Set majestically on St. Simons Island, The Lodge and its 40 guest rooms are secluded, inviting, and grand. Approached through an enchanting tunnel of antebellum oaks, The Lodge offers expansive ocean views, and is surrounded by the emerald fairways of The Sea Island Golf Club. These include Plantation and Seaside – two 18-hole championship courses. Sea Island’s superb Gold Performance Center is adjacent to The Lodge, while the 18-hole Retreat Course is nearby.

At The Lodge, experience world-class golf, invigorating activities, and 24-hour butler service. Southern hospitality at The Lodge is peerless. Enjoy world-class dining at Colt & Alison and The Oak Room. From the privacy of your room or suite, enjoy unobstructed views with morning coffee, and delight in the setting sun with our bagpiper. Whether visiting to test the resort’s championship Southeast golf courses or simply for relaxation, The Lodge offers an exceptional experience.

The associate brought his wife as well so we had wonderful double date.  They made sure we got a pass to go inside the gates of Sea Island to see all of the beautiful homes, and we were so glad to have that opportunity!

I had never heard of these islands before that weekend, but now I would recommend either resort for a romantic weekend or a family vacation.  There’s plenty to do on both islands. You can’t go wrong!
