Breckenridge
I have experienced the Denver airport now more times than I could have imagined, but this was one of my first times there so I was pleased by how well laid out it was. Two thumbs up (could have better restaurants, but other than that, two thumbs up.)
We arrived in to beautiful snowy Breckenridge by way of driving from Denver.
So Stephen and I drove in the snow to Breckenridge, and I was surprised by how beautiful the drive was. I’d only ever been to Colorado once. It was in high school so I don’t remember a lot of it. (I was probably too busy flirting with boys, etc.)
When we pulled up in front of the Village at Breckinridge, I thought it was just magical.
It is half a block from Main Street and borders the National Forest and Maggie Pond. The exterior went through a renovation in 2010 so it looks like “Mountain Elegance with Historical Features”.
The hotel sits on the base of Peak 9 so right out our window we could see skiers all day long.
We booked a three-bedroom suite for ourselves, Sami (my stepdaughter), and Sami’s aunt, cousin, and boyfriend.
While the suite was very nice with a kitchen, living room, and dining room, it was slightly dated.
The only real complaint, though, was the bed. It was positively like sleeping on just laid bricks. The air was very dry so sleep happened for only a couple hours each night, but who needs sleep on a vacation after all?!?
I did take a ski lesson through the resort (Breck Sports) with a couple of very cute just out of college instructors that made me feel like I had this skiing thing down.
I might as well have been Bridget Jones! Scariest experience ever! Stephen could not stop laughing at me. Oh well, at least I looked cute in my new ski suit.
For the rest of the trip, I happily sipped hot chocolate by the fireplace at the quaint little Starbucks while everyone else skied.
The first night Stephen and I were by ourselves and he took me to Fatty’s Pizzeria.
Fatty’s Pizzeria occupies one of the oldest established restaurants in Breckenridge. It was originally a hotel/restaurant, but in 1975, it was made into the pizza joint it is today. This is absolutely a favorite local haunt. Even though this restaurant is not on Main St, it is incredibly packed most nights and very hard to get a table.
Stephen and I waited almost an hour, but anyone that knows me, knows that nothing stands in the way of me and pizza. An hour wait does not detere me.
We decided to hang at the bar. Even there it was hard to get a seat or a drink, but we persevered and planted our booties in the first available spot.
Beers were good, pizza and lasagna even better.
Highly recommend…I mean how could you not like a place called Fatty’s?!?
Through the week we ate at several different restaurants.
First up, Crepes A La Cart!
Who doesn’t love a good crepe? Sweet or savory, this little gem has it all.
Situated right on Main St between the shops, this restaurant is actually just a cute little shack with some outside seating. It reminds me of the snow cone huts you’d see randomly placed in the summer in Oklahoma.
You just walk up to the window and order, and what’s cooked for you will take you straight to the streets of Nice, France. It is not to be missed!
Next up, Downstairs at Eric’s. Such a cute family friendly place!!!!
Downstairs at Eric’s is literally down a flight of stairs in a basement.
You walk down straight into an arcade of vintage video games. Ms. Pacman, Gallaga, the racecar games, you name it, they’ve probably got it. It’s a good thing too, because this place was crowded!!!! Like, 2 hour wait crowded!
We had such a great time playing in the arcade though that we barely noticed. Once we got a table, we enjoyed the wings and pizza.
This is definitely a must do experience on a night out in Breckenridge, especially if you have kids. They’ll love it!
Lastly, I have to recommend Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant and Cantina.
When you get know me, you’ll learn I could live off of two basic foods: Pizza and Mexican food. It’s horrible I know, but I am a quarter Mexican (my dad was half), so I blame it on that.
We had been in Breckenridge for about a week, and we had already tried the pizza, so I had to go for the Mexican.
This place came highly well reviewed and didn’t disappoint.
Known for being a local hangout for happy hour, the margaritas alone are a good reason for coming…with 100+ varieties of tequila, you’re bound to find something you like.
With a standard Mexican menu and quick service, it’s a great go to place for your South of the Border cravings in Breck!
If you want to do a ski vacation, Breckenridge is the place to go! It was clean, in a great location, and we had a great stay.
